    Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean by: "A separate license is required for each user or each device that is used by multiple users?"

The intention is just to be honest. If you have two devices you are allowed to load it on both devices. However, if a company has two iPads that are used by different people it should purchase a separate copy for each. The best way for companies to purchase multiple copies is with Apple's Volume Purchase Program (VPP). As usual, feel free to contact us if you need more information.

What devices do GIS Kit and GIS Pro run on?

Of course, the latest hardware is recommended for best performance, but GIS Kit/Pro will run on any device with iOS 4.0 or later. It is a universal app so it is designed to work well on an iPad sized screen as well as an iPhone. True standalone GPS is recommended and can be found on the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S as well as the iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G. However, third-party GPS receivers such as the Bad Elf also work well with iPod touches and non-3G iPads. (more on iPhone/iPad GPS)

What is the difference between GIS Kit and GIS Pro?

GIS Pro is the enterprise version of the two and has some features that are typically required in a collaborative environment. These include raster imagery, Shapefile and CSV export, feature class sharing, and WMS.

If I purchase GIS Kit can I upgrade to GIS Pro at a discounted price?

Yes. GIS Kit contains an in-app purchase that enables all the functionality of GIS Pro.

    How accurate is the GPS?

Here is a discussion regarding GPS accuracy in the iPad and iPhone.

How can I be sure my iPad is rugged enough for field use?

From We have received a number of recommendations of OtterBox's products, including the iPad 2 Defender Series Case and the OtterBox Utility Series Latch. We have received reports that this setup (iPad 2 + GPS Pro + OtterBox Case + OtterBox Latch) is receiving rave reviews by GIS consultants doing daily field work and at one tenth the cost of comparable setups.
